Who Took The Independence Child? The Abduction of Teekah Latres Lewis

I basically chose this case because I had already made this poster and downloaded most of the articles for this case for someone who does their own work. At one point we were looking to do something together. Her team decided not to use this poster or any of the articles. She does great work. If you Google AVoice4TheLost you'll find her work. She covered this case better than I did. She has actually worked with the family. I urge you to check it out. I want to be clear when I say I am not trying to step on anyone's toes by covering this case. The more people cover cases like this. The more exposure they get. This isn't a case I would normally do as it thankfully got a lot of coverage in the media over the years. But I am glad I ended up writing this entry. I didn't pay attention to any of the podcasts or YouTubers that did this case. Although my dear friend Gabby did an episode on this case. It can be watched here. I dedicated Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls to this entry. It's one of my all time favorite songs. I really appreciate the recent emails from readers who are happy with the recent entries I published. It's very kind. I received one that was very humbling regarding the effort and detail I put into every entry I write. I can't say I am the best true crime blogger out there. But I definitely try to be. Thanks again.

New Frontier Lanes: Bowling Alley Teekah was last seen pictured here in 1971

"There's no concrete evidence about what happened," said Pierce County sheriff's Sgt. Cyndie Fajardo, who coordinated nearly three dozen search-and-rescue volunteers at the scene. "She vanished into thin air."

I wanna say the timing of when Teekah actually went missing is kinda dicey if you compare the initial reports by the newspapers and the old Angelfire Site that was run by Teekah's Family. According to the Family's Site, Teekah went missing around 10:30 pm. However newspaper reports (Which usually rely on Law Enforcement for details) say Teekah went missing anywhere from 9:45 to 10:30 pm. So there is a window of around 45 minutes. That's if you go by the news reports that is.

DETAILS OF DISAPPEARANCE

The game against the wall in the back is the game Teekah was playing on. You'll notice the exit just steps away.

At around 8:30 pm Teekah's mom Theresa, Teekah, and around half a dozen other family members arrived at the New Frontier Lanes Bowling Alley located at 4702 Center St. in Tacoma Washington.
(Which is now a Home Depot) The Bowling Alley was jam packed that Saturday Night. According to reports, There weren't enough parking spaces for everyone. Teekah's Family started bowling in Lanes 7 & 8. At around 10:30 pm Theresa saw Teekah enter the arcade area of the establishment and climb into a video game called Cruisin World. (I remember that game so well.) Theresa followed her over to the game until it was her turn to bowl. Once it was Theresa's turn, Theresa's Boyfriend Fred Biggs stood near Teekah. And when it was Biggs' turn, Teekah's Uncle Timmy Czapiewski stood watch over Teekah. According to reports, Czapiewski turned around to watch Biggs' bowl for only a moment. And when he turned back around. Teekah was gone. She was not in the game where he last saw her. She was nowhere. (It's worth noting that the nearest exit from the game Teekah was last seen on was only around 6 feet away.) After they all quickly searched for around 15 minutes. Theresa notified an off duty Tacoma Police Officer who was working security. In a few minutes it was announced over the speaker. 15 Minutes after it was announced. Law Enforcement was there and they had cordoned off the parking lot and were searching cars. When that failed to find Teekah. Law Enforcement began looking into the background of Workers at the Bowling Alley as well as Registered Sex Offenders in the local area. A Volunteer Search of 33 people with 8 dog handlers began searching the surrounding area in the instance Teekah had somehow exited the alley. A 1.5 Mile Radius around the perimeter of the Bowling Alley was searched. A Helicopter with Infrared was also utilized. The search was concluded on Sunday by 5 pm after more than 15 straight hours. She simply vanished. All efforts to locate Teekah with the initial search came up with nothing. On the 26th a nearby pond was dragged but no clues were found. By the 27th the 1.5 mile radius was widened to 3 miles. A local radio station recruited 50 volunteers to hand out fliers with Teekah on them.

The "Official Search" may have ended that Sunday. However according to The Daily Herald, On January 30th 2 dogs tracked Teekah's scent to a brushy area across from the Bowling Alley. Under a bush a ball of men's clothes were found. They did not have mildew on them and Law Enforcement stated they had not been there long. The Bundle included a Navy Blue Wool Coat with the initials "IS" or "JS" written in the neck label. A pair of off white Lee brand Jeans and a Columbia brand button down Plaid Flannel Shirt. A Forensic Team allowed the clothes to dry and then combed through the fibers. Law Enforcement couldn't say that the clothing was related to Teekah's Abduction.

THE ONGOING INVESTIGATION

Within a month of Teekah's abduction more than 700 tips poured in and more than 300 people were interviewed. 10 Detectives and 6 FBI Agents began working round the clock in an effort to find Teekah. They were looking to identify everyone who was at the Bowling Alley that night. Law Enforcement estimated that there were around 150 people bowling and just as many spectators. (Spectator amount seems high to me. But it's been years since I bowled.) Calls came in regarding people seeing Teekah "lookalikes". One such instance occurred in Hood River, Oregon. The Parent was questioned and produced a Birth Certificate. And an unlucky McDonald's patron in Tacoma was tapped on the shoulder while he and his daughter enjoyed their meals. Mr. James Ward admitted to being "scared" by the officers demeanor. But admitted he was glad to see Law Enforcement working the case. "If my daughter was missing, I'd be hoping they'd do the same for her." he stated. Law Enforcement also had calls from a bunch of dipshit "psychics" who had "visions" of Teekah. Law Enforcement stated they got around 1-4 calls a day from "Cleos" (And I don't mean to offend any Native American beliefs or customs by saying that. I do understand Theresa does have a lot of faith in her heritage. Faith and Phonies are two different things.) The family even got some information from self-proclaimed "Psychic" Monica Sepulveda.....(Who isn't too fond of me by the way) She claimed that whoever took Teekah was waiting for a reward to be posted before they returned Teekah. (Yea Sure.) One good thing came out of this. In April of 1999 Congress Passed the Teekah Lewis Act. (Whether that is still in effect or not. I'm not sure. Government shit bores me to no end.)
ONE YEAR LATER

After a year of investigating, The News Tribune (January 21st, 2000) reported that Law Enforcement was searching for 2 men that were seen standing near Teekah the night she was last seen. Law Enforcement stated this would've been around 10:15 pm that night. By this point Law Enforcement had talked to nearly everyone that was at the bowling alley that night twice. A teenager informed Law Enforcement he saw two men standing near the video games around the time Teekah disappeared. According to this teenager....

"They looked like they were following her as she walked towards the front desk door area."

The men were described as follows:

Man #1: Believed to be in his 30s or 40s. About 5'11 and around 200lbs with brown hair and a thick mustache, pockmarked face and a big nose. (And I thought I was ugly.)
Man #2: Also believed to be in his 30s or 40s. About 5'9 and around 200 lbs. He had long black hair. He wore dirty jeans and a jacket with a sports logo on it. (At some point, Later on in the investigation. Man #2 seems to vanish as a person of interest. And the investigation seems to focus on Man #1 only. Also a few years ago news reports stated Law Enforcement suddenly released a "new" suspect description. When the info has always been the same)

Detectives also stated they were looking for a car that was seen speeding out of the parking lot that night. A woman driving into the Bowling Alley parking lot reported she saw a 1980s or early 1990s model Pontiac Grand Am leaving at a high rate of speed the night Teekah vanished. She stated it was possibly a maroon colored 4 door sedan with tinted windows and a spoiler attached to the trunk.

I got this picture from Teekah's old site on Angelfire

The one pictured looks like it doesn't have a trunk spoiler. The Trunk Spoilers started being added to that model in 92. (Factory wise) I'm sure if you wanted to customize an earlier model. It probably could've been done.

These are probably closer than the one provided by the family's website.
Throw Tinted Windows on this one and it fits the description. If we can assume
the lady who saw the car leaving the parking lot knows her cars. The thing worth
noting here is this is a 1995 model. I remember this model well as my Grandpa use to drive one.

The Lewis family was also investigated. Theresa was given 2 polygraphs and passed them both. The Detectives at the time were convinced that Teekah's abduction was not a Family Related Abduction. Teekah's father, Robert Lewis, was serving time in prison at the time Teekah was abducted. Law Enforcement questioned him regarding her abduction. And he maintained he knew nothing about it.

TWO YEARS LATER

In May of 2001, DNA was collected from the Lewis family to be compared to Precious Doe. Precious Doe ended up being a young girl who was murdered by the name of Erica Green. Who's decapitated nude corpse was found in Kansas City, MO. Her killers were eventually found. (Mother and Stepfather) (I won't even go into this. It makes me too mad.) Other than the DNA being collected in 2001. There were no other leads that were made public in 2001.

2006: A Possible Break?
The News Tribune: April 22nd 2006

In April of 2006 There seemed to be a break in the case. The Lewis' family's Private Investigator tracked down a girl matching Teekah's age and general description living in an RV park in Texas. According to Theresa, The ear on the girl seemed to match Teekah's. So much so that she believed the girl to be Teekah. Even tho the FBI had their own doubts. A DNA Test was scheduled. And in June of 2006 the results indicated that the girl was NOT Teekah. Unfortunately.

 2008- A Fresh Perspective

"We believe somebody kidnapped her, A stranger."

Detective Lindsey Wade

The News Tribune: January 23rd, 2008

In 2008, To coincide with the anniversary of Teekah's Abduction. Detectives released new family photos and videos of Teekah. One video is of Teekah at a family function celebrating Christmas 28 days before her disappearance. This was a result of Detectives Brad Graham and Lindsey Wade picking up Teekah's case during that summer. The article stated that the Bowling Alley is no longer there. And detectives reiterated the fact that they were never able to locate the driver of the car that was seen speeding from the bowling alley that night. They again described it as a Late 80s or early 90s model Grand Am with tinted windows. (The spoiler aspect as well as the color are absent from the description in the article. Which is interesting.)

"We want to reach out to people here who knew somebody who changed their demeanor or attitude level or suspicion level that night or the days following. We want people to re-examine their conscience and revisit that night."

Detective Brad Graham

In October of 2008, Teekah and Lenoria Jones were featured on the side of Semi Trucks as part of the Homeward Bound Program. This was a partnership with Gordon Trucking of Pacific and the Washington State Patrol that was launched in 2006 to assist in spreading the awareness of missing children. Teekah's case was going on 9 years. With no further leads as to where she might be.

2010-Dipshits with "Visions"

In 2010, A new "lead" came to fruition. At the annual vigil held for Teekah by her family. A person described as a "Man in his 40s" told Theresa that he had "visions" of Teekah. As a result of this "tip". Law Enforcement began digging at Native Garden in Point Defiance Park. On Wednesday January 27th Law Enforcement began digging. They dug until just before dark. And the spokesman for the Tacoma Police Department Mark Fulghum is quoted as saying.

The Search "Didn't turn up anything that would help us." Go figure.

Oh it's time I'm afraid..... It's time for an ADD Tangent....

I can't take it anymore. You can believe anything you want. If someone wants to believe in hocus pocus magic psychic tardery. Go ahead. (I still love you Mo Montgomery) Free country. I'm gonna ask you a few questions tho. Can you point to one psychic that won the lottery? Can you? Because I can't. I ain't gonna lie. That's the first thing I'm gonna do if I was psychic. And that's not selfish. I'd probably win it about 5-6 times in a row. So that I can be rich enough to afford all the taxes they are gonna take out. And so that I can be financially stable to dedicate myself to using my so-called "power" to help people full time. Any psychic that tells you they can't use their power to predict the numbers of the Power Ball because that's just not how their "powers" work is full of shit. If Psychics can have these "visions" about a missing girl. Why don't they go and assist Law Enforcement dig in the areas they have these visions in? You'd think if it was as fool proof as they claim it is. They'd want to show everyone how right they were. But it never happens. And there is a difference between being a straight up douche bag and getting a family's hopes up by approaching them and telling them shit that you know is bogus. And a family going to you and asking your "guidance" in a matter. End of Tangent.

2011-New Details On The Car

July 4th, 2011 The Longview Daily News added an interesting detail to the car that the police were searching for the night Teekah vanished. In prior reports the lady who saw the car leaving is quoted as saying that she saw the car speeding out of the parking lot. (Words to the effect) In this new report, The car nearly crashed into the woman's car and it fishtailed as it sped away.

2012-Case In Review-New Leads

Starting in January of 2012, Detective Lindsey Wade started reviewing Teekah's case file in search of new leads. 3 incidents caught her eye.....

The First Incident: November 29th 1998

A 4 year old boy was bowling with his dad at Frontier Lanes. The boy wandered over to the arcade area for a bit before heading to the bathroom. At one point another patron entered the bathroom and noticed the boy laying down on the floor in one of the stalls. He had been sexually assaulted. The Suspect was described as a White Man with Brown Curly Hair and a Beard. And he possibly wore a hat with the word HUSKY across the front of it. This is the most outrageous aspect of this incident. The Bowling Alley Security Guards were notified of this incident. The father assumed that they would notify Tacoma PD. They didn't.....Yep. They didn't notify them. The father found out the next day when he reached out to Tacoma PD. The father ended up filing the report. The dipshit "security" officers are on record stating they believed they knew who the guy who did it. But they didn't know his name. (derrrrrrrrrrrrrr) Detective Wade asserted the man in question must've been a regular.

The Second Incident-January 23rd 1999 2pm:

On January 26th 1999 a tip was called into the Tacoma Police Department stating that a few weeks prior to Teekah's abduction, A 6 year old boy was almost kidnapped from the bowling alley. Detective Wade spoke to the boy's mother. The boy was in the arcade by himself but his mother was in range to keep her eyes on him. At some point she saw a stranger bent down talking to her son and the man had a hold of her son's hand. The mother rushed to her son. At this point the man was saying he was the boy's father. The mom and several other patrons confronted the creep. Security was called. And he was escorted from the building. Again, Just like in the previous case. The mother assumed that Tacoma Pd would be notified. And to no one's surprise. They weren't The creep was described as a White Male with Brown Hair.

The Third Incident:

Blue 1995 Pontiac Grand Am (2 Door with Spoiler) The 3rd incident doesn't say whether the car in question was either a 2 door or four door. Nor does it specify the year of the model. Nor does it say it had a spoiler. I only used this picture to see how similar the descriptions of both Grand Ams are in relation to this case.

This incident was in the hours prior to Teekah's abduction. A father and his 2 sons were hanging out at
Oakland/Madrona Park. Which is less than a mile away from where the Bowling Alley was. A father spotted a creep near the bathrooms. And he was apparently trying to lure 2 two children to come with him. (The article doesn't state whether they were the man's kids the creep tried to lure or 2 other children. Not that it matters.) The father chased the man off. Who in turn got into a Blue 1995 Pontiac Grand Am and sped off. The man was described as White with Brown Hair and a Baseball Cap. After hearing Teekah's story. The father called the department tip line on the 26th of January. According to Detective Wade. It didn't appear that detectives at the time looked at those events as being related to Teekah's. Nor did it appear that anyone else in the years prior attempted to correlate that data with anything related to Teekah's case. When Theresa was notified of this. Her hopes were shattered.

"Now I have little hope. It's hard for me to accept it"

Theresa Lewis

807 S. Hawthorne St.

July 23rd 2012: The News Tribune reported that over the weekend (21st and 22) a house at 807 S. Hawthorne St. in Tacoma was searched for possible evidence related to Teekah's case. The man living in the home, John William Black, had pleaded guilty of child luring at another bowling alley in Tacoma, claimed he had never seen Teekah. However, When the paper asked Theresa about the search of Black's home. She told a different story. She stated the Police told her that Black had told them, He had seen Teekah at the bowling alley that night. And even spoke to her. Authorities dug up parts of Black's yard as 2 separate dogs hit on the same location. However nothing was found. According to the newspaper Black plead guilty in a Child Luring Case that occurred on October 13th 2012 at Tower Lanes Bowling Alley in Tacoma. According to Court Documents, Black squatted down and talked to the 3 year old girl saying her mother was in a car nearby. The Father saw this and ran up and punched him in the face. Black was later arrested and sentenced to 12 months in prison. He denied any involvement in Teekah's disappearance. Law Enforcement declined to comment on the reasons as to why they were at his residence. Or Theresa's comments regarding Black admitting to being at the Bowling Alley the night Teekah went missing. It was ultimately determined that Black was not a suspect in Teekah's disappearance.

2014- 15 Years and No Closer

2015: 16 Years and More Conflicting Information

In 2015 even more conflicting information was released concerning the car that sped out of the parking lot the night Teekah disappeared. The News Tribune reported on January 23rd 2015 that Detective Wade said a BLACK Pontiac Grand Am was seen speeding away from the bowling alley that night. And that it was likely the car contained Teekah. Meaning it was the abductor's car. So I guess the car is now a Black Grand Am.
(News reports since have described the car in question as either "maroon" or "dark colored" in appearance.)

2018: 19 Years

2020: Important Info Released

This is a bombshell interview. For once the damn media does a good story.
Pay attention to the description of the man with the pockmarked face. And what he was wearing. Then go back to the clothing that was found not long after Teekah was abducted. One of the articles of clothing that was found is a flannel shirt. But the reports don't indicate the color of the flannel shirt. They only mention that it was a button down flannel shirt. Also the America's Most Wanted tip corroborates the eyewitness's description of the "Pockmarked Man".

ANALYSIS

I already reached out Lindsey Wade on Facebook regarding the clothes that were found. I am hoping to get clarification as to whether the flannel shirt is blue or not. I doubt she responds. But it is worth a try. There are a lot of interesting aspects of this case. One of several being how the Persons of Interest "morphed" from 2 Persons. Into just one. The interview with the then teenager (2020 News Video) who saw a pockmarked man taking a mixed young girl to the restroom is interesting as well. As I outlined earlier, In the beginning of the investigation, A young man stated that he saw 2 men standing next to Teekah at the Cruisin World game. And then he saw (I'm assuming were the same two men) walking a young girl, presumed to be Teekah, towards the front desk door exit. If we presume the placing of the Cruisin World game is the same as it is in the pictures above. Then why walk Teekah that direction when there was an exit right by the game? Literally 6 feet away. And if we go back to the 2020 interview with the other teen. He said he saw a pockmarked man taking a girl, who he was sure was Teekah, into a restroom. Now is this the same kid? I think so. Because in the video it states that they interviewed this teen not long after the investigation started. So I'm basing this assessment based on the facts outlined. I think this is a common police practice. Where Law Enforcement lets out certain info, That's sometimes intentionally inaccurate, In an attempt to filter out false leads they may receive later. Just like how the car kept changing colors. And whether or not it had a spoiler or not. Now I understand that some of this may be a result of bad or inept reporting as well. Also, Theresa has over the years said some things about the investigation that hasn't panned out. Like when they searched John William Black's house. She stated that he told Police that he saw Teekah at the Bowling Alley that night and he even spoke to her. Black stated he had no idea who Teekah even was. Law Enforcement stayed quiet and declined to comment. But later stated Black was not a suspect. Then years later, Theresa said Law Enforcement showed her a picture of the "Pockmarked Man" that was at the bowling alley that night and she recognized him. Which is odd. Because Law Enforcement is steadfast that they have no suspect in this case. Yet, If we are to believe Theresa's account. Law Enforcement has continued to let the media report on a man they already know the identity of. The only way this makes sense is if they have a picture of this man. And don't know who he is. Which I seriously doubt. Because they would've released it by now. And if they do. It would've likely been as a result of either cameras that were at the establishment. Or a patron who was either taking pictures or filming that night at the bowling alley. And I doubt the quality of the picture is very good. Even if that is the case. It still makes zero sense. Because Theresa stated that this person has even followed her daughter's Facebook page. If we presume this is accurate. And the idiot is that brazen. Then he is a dumb ass. Especially if he used his real name and/or has a picture of himself on the Facebook account he used to follow Teekah's page. For one. He just gave Law Enforcement a better picture of himself. And if he didn't use his real name or put a picture on the account. Theresa wouldn't know this person was the person Law Enforcement was looking for. The only other way this makes sense, Is if he sent that page a message. Which again, Is beyond dumb. They would easily be able to find him by acquiring a warrant and working with Facebook. In my opinion. I don't think either of these things Theresa has stated over the years is accurate. Having said this, I want to be absolutely clear. I am NOT attacking her. I am simply giving my analysis on the case. I think she is doing what any parent would do in her situation. She is trying to generate her own leads. Because she is desperate. And I don't blame her at all. I can't imagine what she has had to live with all these years. My heart goes out to her. Frontier Lanes is lucky they are not in business anymore. If they were and I was Theresa. I'd own that place. There was more than one instance of child luring (One being more than that) that took place prior to Teekah's abduction. And in both cases. The idiot security guards did nothing to notify authorities. In one instance they escorted a man who tried to abduct a child outside. I'm assuming to ban him from the property. Did they not get his name? Check his ID or anything? How would they know he wouldn't come back if they didn't notify management? How do we know this isn't the man who abducted Teekah? That is insane! Now onto the man with the pockmarked face. If the description of this man is accurate. And you take into account this was 1999. I am not sure this man is still alive. I hope he is. But the general description of the man leads me to believe this dirty bastard didn't take care of himself. The pockmarks on his face are usually the results of old acne that hasn't been taken care of. Or in other cases staph infections. Staph infections can be a symptom/result of heroin addiction. In Tacoma it looks like opioids are the drug of choice. I didn't go back 25 years to see if it was the same in that area. But the late 90s and early 2000s is when the opioid epidemic really took flight. I know that's probably a little bit of overthinking. But it fits the facts. I ended up becoming overly obsessed with this article and case. So I will continue to update this entry with news articles and videos related to the case over the coming weeks. I just needed to get it published.
