Popular Song At The Time
GENESIS- MISUNDERSTANDING

Cecile Frances Moch

Throughout the late 1960’s, many spiritual groups, that we now identify as cults, had begun to spring up across the country. These communal lifestyles were somehow appealing to the youth and young adults of the time, and Sunburst in Santa Barbara was one of many.

Sunburst began in 1969, originally called The Brotherhood of the Sun, and was led by Norman Paulsen. The foundation of the group, at least initially, was based on celibacy, meditation, and living off the land. The group did not condone violence, drugs, alcohol, or even tobacco in its early days.

At its heyday in the 1970’s, the group had approximately 300 members. It owned a large organic farm, and operated two restaurants and four stores. A former member of Sunburst, Michael Ableman, described the living situation as follows:

"I was sleeping on a wooden pallet in a sleeping bag while Paulsen and some of the leaders who didn't seem to do any work had houses and fancy cars."

In the late 1970’s, Sunburst began to change. It’s leader, Norman Paulsen, who had always preached non-violence, became increasingly paranoid and began stockpiling weapons and ammunition. Military style training courses were offered to the group in order to prepare for the destruction of Society.  And It became known that the anti-drug Paulsen himself was addicted to drugs and alcohol.

These changes caused many members to leave the group. Several sued Paulsen, as he had reportedly used communal funds to purchase drugs.  The suit was dropped before going to court.

By the end of 1980, Sunburst had lost the majority of its free labor, and could no longer pay the mortgage on the ranch. They eventually lost all the land. Members who had lived on the farm for over a decade were suddenly displaced. They had no income, no skills, and no idea how to survive on their own.

And in the midst of all the turmoil, a 19 year old woman named Cecile Frances Moch disappeared. Nobody seemed to notice.

I’m sure her family noticed, but the media certainly didn’t. I was unable to find a single article about her disappearance, even after her AMC Gremlin was found abandoned in the Santa Ynez Mountains.

What’s known about her is very little. She was from an affluent neighborhood in Santa Barbara, graduating from Rolling Hills High School. She was a college student at the time of her disappearance.  (Accounts differ as to whether she was attending Santa Barbara City College or UC Santa Barbara.). She had a job.

She worked, it just so happens, as a server at the Sunburst Farms restaurant, which was owned by the cult. It is not known if she was a member of the cult, or just an employee of one of their businesses.

From reading many articles about Sunburst, it would not seem as though they would have employed outside labor - although it’s possible they did in 1980, as they had lost so many members and were trying to save the farm.

Sunburst moved to Big Springs Ranch in Northeastern Nevada after being forced to sell their farm in Santa Barbara.  A small number of members followed the group, but their new desert location did not allow for growing food and its members worked “normal jobs”.

Many have speculated that Cecile could be Arroyo Grande Jane Doe, who was found on a dirt road in Henderson, Nevada in October 1980. She’d been stabbed within 24 hours of being found, likely with an ice pick.  Dental records suggested she was not impoverished and had a recent tattoo of the letter S. (Sunburst immediately came to mind although I’ve not read of members having such a tattoo.)  Jane Doe stood approximately 5’2” and weighed between 103-110 lbs. Cecile is listed at 5’3” and 100 lbs.

Cecile currently does not have a DNA sample in NamUs to compare, and she is not listed as a rule out for Arroyo County Jane Doe. It would be helpful to locate a family member of Cecile’s so that a DNA sample can be submitted and compared.

Norman Paulsen died in 2006, but Sunburst still exists as a retreat. It’s membership is small, and mostly consists of senior citizens. It is unknown if Cecile’s connection to Sunburst had anything to do with her disappearance.

DATE OF BIRTH: 1/16/1935
MISSING SINCE: 4/12/1996 FROM MAMMOTH CAVE, KENTUCKY
HEIGHT AND WEIGHT: 5'5 120lbs
HAIR AND EYES: GREY HAIR & GREEN EYES
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: SURGICAL SCARS ON HER BACK, WEARS DENTURES, SMOKER
HOBBIES: ACCOMPLISHED SEAMSTRESS, FISHING, GROWING ROSES

CIRCUMSTANCES OF DISAPPEARANCE

Ora Aylene J. Lawrence-Barrick was a widow who resided by herself in a small cabin off an isolated gravel road in Mammoth, Kentucky for 15 years prior to her disappearance. Aylene was last seen walking her dog on Laurel Ridge Rd on April th 12th 1996. She spoke to a neighbors son who was staying in his parents cabin at 2pm . She was never heard from or seen again. One of her neighbors reported her missing 3 days later. (She only had 2) LE went to Alyne's residence and discovered all the lights were off and the doors locked. There was no sign of forced entry. LE forced their way in and discovered blood on the floor and a sofa was pushed out of place. In the bedroom the bed sheet was fitted and there were bloodstained clothes on top of her bed. A glass that normally set beside her bed on a nightstand was on the floor. Her Purse along with her bed sheet were missing. Her dentures were soaking in their container inside the bathroom along with a burned out cigarette bud. A new plastic trash bag was placed over her trashcan before whatever happened occurred. It would appear as though her nightly routine was interrupted. A bag of trash sat atop of the kitchen counter ready to be taken out the next morning. Her house keys were located in her truck. And her truck keys were located inside her house. Barrick kept $400 in cash inside her freezer and it was there when the house was searched. A fake rock that she normally kept an extra house key in that sat outside her house was missing. But its uncertain if she always kept it there.  Her Pomeranian Dog Fifi was locked inside its crate. She was reportedly dating a younger man at the time but none of her family knew him by name. Authorities believe that her body may have been wrapped in the missing bed sheet and buried in a shallow grave close to her home. Cadaver dogs were used in the beginning of the investigation without success. Police believe there may be people with information who aren't coming forward. Alyne was known to have a quick temper and once threatened to hit a neighbor with a cane. Her family stated despite this she didn't have any enemies tho. Barrick had employed a handy man at the time she disappeared. Little is known about him. LE did interview a man who was guilty of attacking an older woman in another state. But he wasn't charged. Foul Play is suspected and the case is being treated as a homicide.

"RURAL AREA IS KIND OF AN UNDERSTATEMENT HE SAID ITS JUST HILLS AND HOLLOW.....OLD HOMES WITH WELLS AND SINKHOLES"

MY THOUGHTS:

I SUSPECT IT WAS SOMEONE IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY WHO WALKED OVER TO HER HOUSE THAT NIGHT AND INTERRUPTED HER ROUTINE. OR SOMEONE SHE KNEW INTIMATELY WAS THERE THAT NIGHT. I LEAN TOWARDS A LOCAL, LIKELY A NEIGHBOR WHO KNEW HER WELL ENOUGH AND WALKED OVER TO HER HOUSE AND GAINED ENTRY. EITHER BY AN UNLOCKED DOOR OR THE KEY SHE KEPT OUTSIDE INSIDE THE FAKE ROCK.  I'D LIKE TO KNOW THE NAME OF THE BOY WHO WAS STAYING THE NIGHT IN HIS PARENTS CABIN WHO SHE TALKED TO EARLIER THAT DAY. AS WELL AS THE HANDYMAN. I'D LIKE TO KNOW IF LE EVER FOUND OUT WHO HER YOUNGER BOYFRIEND WAS AS WELL. I CONCUR WITH LE THAT SHE IS LIKELY BURIED SOMEWHERE CLOSE. I DID CONTACT LE AHEAD OF TIME ON THIS. THE OFFICER ORIGINALLY IN CHARGE OF THIS CASE FORWARDED THE INFO TO THE OFFICER NOW IN CHARGE. I NEVER HEARD BACK. I ALSO REACHED OUT TO ALYNE'S FAMILY AHEAD OF TIME. NEVER HEARD BACK EITHER.

At the time of this writing this person doesn't have a Charley Project Page or a WebSleuth Thread. There is literally NOTHING on this man. Which is very surprising since he was a State Representative at the time he was abducted. I came across his case while researching another. Everyone has heard of Jimmy Hoffa. But no one has heard of Clem Graver. Until Now.

                                  This is interesting.....
Looks like nothing came of it

DETAILS OF DISAPPEARANCE

On the evening of 11th of June in 1953 at around 9:30 pm Clem Graver was returning from a political function (meeting) at Republican Headquarters located at 809 W. 18th in Chicago, Illinois.  He drove up to his garage at 1013 E 18th St in his Chrysler Sedan. (Half a block from his home) As he drove by he waived at his wife who was on the porch of their home located at 976 W. 18 Place in Chicago. He exited his car to open his garage doors. He then proceeded to get back in his car to pull his car inside the garage. After parking his car he attempted to close his garage doors. Before he could complete the task another car approached. The car was described as a Dark Colored Ford Sedan. Apparently the car had been tailing the Graver car home. 2 men got out of the Ford Sedan and pushed their way inside the garage. The garage doors were then closed from the inside. A moment later 3 men emerged. One was Graver with the 2 guys who had pushed their way inside his garage moments earlier. Graver's arms were placed behind his back and he was struggling with his apparent abductors. The Ford Sedan had a driver in it because the vehicle positioned itself closer to the garage in order to assist in the abduction. The driver wore a baseball cap. Graver was placed inside the car along with the abductors and it was driven away with it lights turned off. Graver previously had been in Springfield, Ill the prior day. He had left home around 6 pm that to attend the organizational meeting. At the time of the abduction Mrs. Graver was on her porch along with a friend Richard Pikelis (Profession: Ticket Seller at a Horse Track) who also witnessed the abduction. Mrs. Graver yelled "Look at what they're doing to my husband!" Pikelis also yelled "Hey, Cut that out!" to no avail.

Things to keep in mind
  1. Graver's bloc was described as "Hoodlum Dominated".
  2. Men who guarded Clem Graver with guns were suspiciously absent the night of the abduction. (YEP!)
  3. Graver's Brother in Law Harry Hochstein also suspiciously vanished right after Graver's abduction. Only to reappear soon thereafter. And wouldn't answer direct questions from the police.
  4. Hochstein stated at the time of the abduction that he was in the "Truck Rental Business".
  5. Graver's estimated salary was around $5,000 a year. But his actual take home amount was in question. He lived modestly but his bankroll seemed inexhaustible.
  6. On 2-6-52 Charles Gross, A Republican Committeeman from the 31st Ward was gunned down and killed.
  7. Graver's brother in law Harry Hochstein was one shady dude! He was actually involved in a kidnapping himself at one point.
  8. Hochstein was a known friend and cohort of none other than Al Capone. Granted, This was years after Capone had any relevance in Chicago. Capone died in 1947.

MY THOUGHTS

To be honest didn't get into this case too much like I did with Leppert and Hartley. It's pretty apparent that his abduction was due to corruption of some kind. The guy was in bed with some pretty bad dudes. He was probably dead soon after the abduction. The kidnappers prob didn't want the drama of doing it in public. And Harry Hochstein, Graver's brother in law knew what happened. That I'm certain of. One good thing about this is that Clem's son Norman had a good career with the Chicago Transit Authority. And was not a corrupt official as his dad was. On a side note at the bottom of the page is a number one for no reason at all. I wasn't able to delete it. Just another one of the Blogger glitches that drive me insane.

DETAILS OF CASE

"Course, we just thought that he was just a friend, so my step daughter went back to sleep and that was the last time anybody ever seen him...he just vanished into the night, " said Howard Adams.

Michael was last seen by his stepsister (Beverly Adams) out her bedroom window at around 11:30 pm on the 8th of June 1987. He had closed the M System Store he had worked at that night and drove home. He had pulled into the driveway awaking Beverly from her sleep. He was standing next to a car in that was parked on their street. He seemed to be talking to whoever was in that car. The car was described as an older model GM with opera style windows and a malfunctioning headlight that flickered. There is speculation that the light flickering could have been a signal that Mike had arrived home as well. Police believe there to be one person in the car. Although some tips have indicated possibly 2 people. The car was possibly brown or gray in color. His car (Red Datsun 280EX) was parked in the driveway. Beverly didn't think anything of this. And assumed that he was talking to a friend or friends. Michael did not appear apprehensive while beside the unknown car.  Beverly didn't see anything to make her think Michael was in danger and went back to sleep.  There were at least 2 people Michael knew that owned that type of car. One being a Former Friend and Classmate. The other a M System Employee (Chito). Chito passed his polygraph. A polygraph was not administered to the owner of the other car. The next morning Michael's stepmother woke up to leave for work. She noticed Michael's car behind hers and blocking her path out of the driveway. Michael always arranged the cars ahead of time to prevent this. She then went inside to find Michael not inside the house. His wallet and money were. Mike had no money on him at the time he disappeared. Nothing was missing from the wallet. The reason for the wallet being at the residence was that Michael came back home earlier that day to change clothes. He was wearing Khaki pants instead of Black pants. He changed into his Black pants and left for work. Michael had numerous run ins with his Manager Steve Turner as well as with numerous people employed at the M System Store. A few felt they were looked over for promotion for the younger Mike. A few days prior to his disappearance Mike caught someone stealing in the backroom. The next day he informed his Manager (Steve) of what was witnessed and was reprimanded for it. He was told he was suppose to be up front. And not to go in the backroom.  The person who was stealing had to have been let in by someone who was working in the back or had a key to the back door. (Or both)  Michael had prepared to send a letter into corporate regarding his issues with Management and Steve in particular. But had decided against it. A number of polygraphs were given during the months after his disappearance. All were passes with the exception of an "Inconclusive" which can also be considered a "fail". That test was given to John Boles. A co-worker. This Co-Worker once told Michael that if he ever needed someone to disappear "All he'd have to do is make a phone call." According to my sources Boles failed 2 polygraphs due to being uncooperative. (Intentionally) All other polygraphs given to Friends, Family, Co-Workers, and Acquaintances were all considered a "Pass". None of Michael's family have seen him since Beverly saw him through her bedroom window on the night of the 8th of June 1987. Some tips came in later suggesting that Michael was assaulted and killed at the Lake Fort Phantom area but they were not substantiated. When I asked sources close to the case about this I was informed that a rumor had it that Michael had broken another guy's arm several months prior to him disappearing. It was rumored that Michael was shot and killed at the Lake Fort Phantom area. And it was a result of a situation that got out of hand. However, LE investigated this claim. And nothing ever came of this. Other tips suggested Michael was visiting a house nearby for a short time around the 16th St. vicinity. And others stated he was going for a short drive around with the driver and possible occupants of the car. Michael's Store Keys were never recovered after his disappearance. Michael was legally declared dead in 1994.

Note: Lake Fort Phantom is the largest body of
water near Abilene.

Then

Now

    Court Records
I would like to point out that Chito DID pass his polygraph test according to my sources. Also, Nothing in Chito's past that I've been able to uncover shows him to be a violent person either. I was gung ho and ready to go after this guy upon starting this case. But something doesn't fit. Why would he go on Missing Reward if he were guilty of something? Why submit to to a polygraph? Only to pass it.  It should be noted that Chito did drive a car matching the description described by Beverly. He drove a Monte Carlo. But, In the Missing Reward episode posted above LE stated a suspicious car was reported in the area the night that Michael Adams disappeared. Nothing real specific regarding the tips. But it had to be around a good amount of time to be noticed. And Chito got off work the same time Michael did. With Michael leaving work and going straight home, That's not a lot of time for a car to be labeled suspicious.

Steve Turner: Mike's Supervisor

Steven Steward Turner

Turner's Facebook

Michael and Steve had some clashes. Michael accused Steve of creating a low morale at the store. As well as humiliating him at times. He wanted to send a letter into corporate about this. But decided against it. According to my sources, Steve said that Michael was a good worker and he had no complaints. Also, I've read that Michael was suppose to only work until 2 pm that day and was informed that he would have to close instead. However, I was told that Michael usually closed the store anyways. And if you watch the Missing Reward Episode I posted. That actually fits with what is said. Michael went to get Chito one night before he closed the store regarding a parking lot incident. And Anita Wilburn stated Michael took a bat with him through the parking lot after they closed the store one night. The only thing that somewhat bothers me about Steve is that Michael's file was empty when it was requested. This made it seem as if there was something to hide. However, Having been in Retail Management as well as in Retail HR. I know a lot of managers aren't paperwork people. And are often neglectful in that area. Nothing that I have been able to dig up on Steve shows him to be a violent individual.

Abel Gonzales: "Co-Worker"

Abel Gonzales was rumored to have been in the parking lot of the M-System store the night that Michael closed. According to my sources it was said he DID work at the store at one point. And then it changed to where he didn't work there. I have no confirmation as to whether he did or not. One telling of the story that night was Michael drove out of the parking lot "sandwiched" between both Abel and Chito.

Via the now defunct FindMikeAdams.com Website:

A Private Investigator was hired in 96 to check into leads regarding Michael's case. Just days before he was to speak with Abel he would be killed in a rafting incident. Coincidence or "Convenient"?

Its a short article on the accident. Nothing really stands out. Was there a body recovered?

Interesting a man dies in 96....Yet gets a DUI in 2007. Unless it another Abel Gonzales with the exact same birth date who happened to BOTH have been in Abilene TX at some point in their lives. Or this is a case of stolen identity.

More Info on Abel:

John Allen Boles: Co-Worker

Date Of Birth: 7/28/68

John Allen Boles was a co-worker of Michael. According to my sources he failed 2 polygraphs intentionally. Yes, Intentionally. Apparently during both polygraphs he became uncooperative intentionally and twice failed as a result or received an "inconclusive". He once told Michael that if he ever wanted to make someone disappear
"All I'd have to do is make a phone call." At times Boles claims he doesn't even remember Michael Adams. Several years ago LE stated they were looking for John Boles. Well, Hopefully they read my blog. According to my information he is in Baird, Texas. I did call Abilene PD and left a message. Got no return call. It should be noted that his car did not match the description given by Beverly.

What happened to Michael Adams?

By Howard Adams

Michael Adams had just graduated from Cooper High School and had made plans to attend college in Lubbock at Texas Tech University.
But something happened on June 8, 1987, that prevented Michael from fulfilling his dreams and ambitions of becoming an architect, from becoming a husband and father with a loving wife and children.
Michael never had the opportunity because on June 8, 1987, Michael disappeared and has not been seen or heard from since.
Michael had a job at M System Food Store, which was located at North 12th Street and Mockingbird Lane. Michael worked the closing shift, three nights a week, at the store. It was a Monday night, so it was Michael's responsibility to, along with his other closing duties: close out the cash registers, set the burglar alarms and lock the front door. Michael left the store around 11:15 p.m.
At approximately 11:30 p.m., Mike's stepsister Beverly saw him pull into the driveway at his home on Peach Street and walk toward a second vehicle that had pulled up in front of the house.
Beverly saw Mike talking to the driver of the vehicle as if he knew them, so she went to bed. The next morning Mike's car, a 280ZX, was in the driveway in the same place that he had parked it the night before, but Michael was nowhere to be found.
Where did Mike go? Who took Mike? What happened to Mike?
These questions and more have haunted our family and friends for years.
Numerous rumors and leads have been given to us and the Abilene Police Department over the years, but the information has led to practically nothing ... until now.
I have a few words for the people who know what happened to Michael on the night of June 8, 1987, which is this.
Go to the authorities and tell them your story. We know that what took place could have been a prank that turned sour, but it's time to put closure to this nightmare that started over 21 years ago.
As a reminder to everyone else who is knowledgeable of what happened, you need to clear your names also.
Please don't wait any longer. It's time.
We will never quit. We will never give up.
Howard Adams is the father of Michael Adams.
